Growing Nature’s Garden

Hello!

Just wanted to remind everyone that Project Native’s 4th Annual Volunteer Day happening this Saturday, June 2nd from noon to 4 pm. We will be removing invasives from the area that will become our woodland seed bank. Volunteer time will be used to match a grant received from the Landowners Incentive Program. Hope you can make it and bring along friends - the more the merrier!!


~*THIS SATURDAY, June 2nd, 12 - 4pm


What’s in it for you: A great opportunity to meet new people & spend a few hours helping a local non-profit and the natural world.

The Task: learn to identify and hand-pull invasive plant seedlings

Why: Invasive species can quickly crowd out native plants destroying natural habitats needed for wildlife. We plan to restore this area with the planting of a native woodland seed bank.

What to bring: long pants, closed-toed shoes, gloves, sunscreen, bag lunch and a water bottle.

Are you curious about what’s happening with our immigration system?
Is it true that there is an increase in the number of immigration raids and detentions? What are my rights and how can I protect them?

Attend a free workshop where you will learn about the proposed Border Security and Immigration Reform and how it will affect you and your family. You will also learn what you can do if someone you know is detained by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), who can drive legally in the state of MA, and how to protect yourrights at work and inside and outside of the home. Information about how you can become more involved in the immigrants’ rights movement including upcoming rallies and action alerts will also be provided.

The workshop will be presented by representatives of The Berkshire Immigrant Center, The Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition, The American Civil Liberties Union, and immigration attorney Michele Sisselman. This is a great opportunity for immigrant advocates and members of our immigrant community to gather, learn, brainstorm, and answer questions in a safe environment.

Asistan a un taller gratuíto donde aprenderán acerca de las últimas propuestas migratorias y como los podrían afectar. También conseguirán información acerca de que pueden hacer si inmigración detiene a alguien conocido (o a usted mismo), quien puede manejar legalmente en el estado de Massachusetts, y como proteger sus derechos en el trabajo, la casa y la calle. Además les diremos como pueden luchar por los derechos de los inmigrantes incluyendo información acerca de marchas u otras actividades nacionales y y estatales en que pueden participar.
El taller será presentado por representatntes del Berkshire Immigrant Center, The Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition, The Amereican Civil Liberties Union, y la abogada de inmigración, Michele Sisselman. Manos Unidas a multicultural, grassroots community empowerment organization based in Pittsfield that works alongside Latino immigrant and under-heard community members as well as with the wider Berkshire community through shared resources, participatory education, and living arts. They aim to construct a culture of community that crosses borders of class, race, culture and geography.

Internships with Manos Unidas can be completed for credit through the Extended Campus Program. By working with Manos Unidas, you will be able to:

-Experience hands-on work concerning immigrant rights, community building, and cultural diversity

-Use or learn skills such as social organizing, media, art, photography, cooking, dance, and compiling data

-Improve your Spanish-speaking skills

-Organize and attend rallies and marches, local and out-of-state conferences, workshops, and community events.

(This is the Year)

This is the year that squatters evict landlords,
gazing like admirals from the rail
of the roofdeck
or levitating hands in praise
of steam in the shower;
this is the year
that shawled refugees deport judges
who stare at the floor
and their swollen feet
as files are stamped
with their destination;
this is the year that police revolvers,
stove-hot, blister the fingers
of raging cops,
and nightsticks splinter
in their palms;
this is the year
that darkskinned men
lynched a century ago
return to sip coffee quietly
with the apologizing descendants
of their executioners.

This is the year that those
who swim the border's undertow
and shiver in boxcars
are greeted with trumpets and drums
at the first railroad crossing
on the other side;
this is the year that the hands
pulling tomatoes from the vine
uproot the deed to the earth that sprouts the vine,
the hands canning tomatoes
are named in the will
that owns the bedlam of the cannery;
this is the year that the eyes
stinging from the poison that purifies toilets
awaken at last to the sight
of a rooster-loud hillside,
pilgrimage of immigrant birth;
this is the year that cockroaches
become extinct, that no doctor
finds a roach embedded
in the ear of an infant;
this is the year that the food stamps
of adolescent mothers
are auctioned like gold doubloons,
and no coin is given to buy machetes
for the next bouquet of severed heads
in coffee plantation country.

If the abolition of slave-manacles
began as a vision of hands without manacles,
then this is the year;
if the shutdown of extermination camps
began as imagination of a land
without barbed wire or the crematorium,
then this is the year;
if every rebellion begins with the idea
that conquerors on horseback
are not many-legged gods, that they too drown
if plunged in the river,
then this is the year.

So may every humiliated mouth,
teeth like desecrated headstones,
fill with the angels of bread

Si lo eres... Si te sientes libre... Si cargas en tu piel las huellas de tus raíces...
Déjamelo saber.
Habla tu que puedes por los miles de hermanos que están siendo deportados, maltratados y humillados. No nos quedemos sentados en el banco del Miedo hay que sonreír y dejarle ver al mundo que Emigrar es un derecho Humano.
*Retos de Piel* hace un llamado a niños, jóvenes y gente de todas las edades y cualquier parte del Mundo.

La Casa Tierra Común de Manos Unidas es el lugar para el arte y la poesía, para el baile, para ser uno mismo.
El Proyecto Retos de Piel solo pretende dejarlo salir. Haciendo que cada uno se sienta orgulloso de su herencia, de el país bajo su piel.
